Lighthouse Diorama Scratch-Build Workflow 1:64 Scale . . .

1:64 Scale Lighthouse Diorama Scratch-Build Workflow

Step 1: Base Structure & Core Framing

Core Materials: Heavy-duty cardboard tube / paper core for the central tower body.  Layout & Markings: Draw guidelines along the cylindrical body to plot window placements, control rooms, and structural levels.

Framing Details: Cut basic EVA foam trim and base rings to form structural anchors at the foundation.

Step 2: Sectional Architecture & Window Cutouts

Recessed Windows: Carefully slice rectangular window openings directly into the cardboard tube along the marked spiral tower control levels.

Level Assembly: Build the upper gallery deck support ring using layered cardboard and EVA foam trims to bridge the main shaft with the lantern room base.

Step 3: Lantern Room & Cupola Construction

Lantern Room: Construct the hexagonal/octagonal lantern room housing using precision-cut cardboard posts and EVA foam trims.

Roofing (Cupola): Form the conical cupola roof profile with curved cardboard and foam caps to seal the top tower assembly.

Step 4: Outbuilding & Surface Trim Detailing

Side Work Room Structure: Fabricate the attached ground-level work room featuring a pitched roof, entrance portal, and foam structural stone framing.

Architectural Trim Work: Apply fine EVA foam window frames, trim overhangs, decorative corbels beneath the gallery deck, and exterior railings.

Step 5: Surface Texturing & Base Prep

Rocky Island Base: Build up the multi-tiered cliff base using sculpted foam blocks layered around the tower foundation.

Mixed-Media Texturing: Apply a thin layer of texture paste, plaster composite, or tissue/glue blend across the tower shaft to simulate aged masonry plaster, while adding individual carved EVA foam bricks along exposed sections.

Base Coat: Seal the entire assembly with a uniform dark gray/black acrylic primer coat.

Step 6: Painting, Weathering & Final Lighting

Base Painting: Apply stone-gray washes to the masonry shaft, deep blue-gray and red accents to the outbuilding and cupola roof, and earthy tones to the rocky sea cliff.

Weathering & Highlighting: Dry-brush white and light gray tones across the stone textures to pop raised highlights; apply dark washes to window recesses, brick joints, and rust stains below metal trims.

Atmospheric Finish: Illuminate the lantern room with warm LED lights and apply vibrant ocean-foam blue washes around the wave-washed cliff base to finalize the coastal scene. #zdesignworks
